How To Start Get a USP For Your Own Internet Mail Order Business

eBay corporate logoImage via Wikipedia

Our objective is making online sales through eBay at the best margins and with the most buyers.
You must set out a brand or rather a business promise that makes you unique.
A brand is simply your customer promise and this creates a selling philosophy or as we might say a “unique selling proposition” or “USP” to maximiuse your eBay sales.

Your Approach To Clients
Successful eBay entrepreneurs will tell you a “lowest price” strategy, is rarely possible as you compete with stock disposal and bankrupt companies and even the odd batch of knocked off stuff.
In truth reality says you will not be the lowest priced seller of an item and that means planning a selling strategy of  how you will price your items and also focus on another feature rather than just price to make you attractive to potential customers.

You must approach price and USP together.
If your unique selling position is that your merchandise is for the high end, more discriminating collector or buyer, your pricing can also be high end, reflecting the value of snob appeal of your product.

If on the other hand, your unique selling proposition is affordable quality, your pricing can be higher than the scally wags because you are selling quality, but still needs to remain in the range that your market considers affordable.

Unique Selling Proposition
To make the difference you will have to be different
We like the quality version of a chosen product. For example, if you sell sandwich boxes, you might want to position yourself as the seller with the sandwich box that will last through a child’s entire educational path from nursery to first job.

Your product may be just a little different than anything else out there and that makes it desirable. You may import your tea from little known estate in Sri Lanka so the true tea
enthusiasts will line up to buy your special brew.

Your product may be a real problem solver. This strategy works especially well in an area that you know well, so you have a good understanding of the common problems that people face, and which solutions might resonate well. For example, if you sell window fixings and you find a mastic gun that won’t leak on a surface if it falls over, or a chefs knife that is child-proof enough so that even accident-prone kids can use it without slicing a finger, your selling proposition is clear – you fixed a problem and that’s always worth a little extra

You don’t need a unique product as a unique seller can get more business. For example, you can be the seller of health products that can tell customers how to use them properly, storen them correctly, use them on a 100 different ailments and so on. Maybe you send along a little pamphlet with each pot sold or send a link to an eBook with special information for your health product customers only.

Many products are easy to understand; others require some  your expertise. A buyer would pay more from a person who not only sells the product but also helps you use it. If you sell video games, maybe you have special website that users can go to exchange information about playing the game.
If you sell golf books about sporting tips, you include two phone calls where you answer questions or give advice.
Or, be the fastest shipper around and/or the safest shipper. Guarantee same day shipping along with shipping insurance and special packaging. Online buyers appreciate any methods that reduce the cost and hassle of shipping and waiting for delivery.
Snob Appeal
Here’s a fun selling proposition if you can manage it. Do you know someone with some celebrity status who uses your product and will endorse it for you? Maybe you sell high end pet supplies and saw a picture in an entertainment magazine of a celebrity toting her toy poodle in your carrier. It might be possible to simply use the photo (with permission) or contact the person and see if she’ll talk about why she likes your carrier. Your products begin to have “snob appeal” and you can build on that status.

Now do not be shy tell everybody about it
Once you determine your USP, you need to use it to brand yourself and your eBay listings. Try to condense your selling proposition into one clear and concise statement. For example:
  • “Let our box keep your child's sandwiches fresh until they get their first job”
  • “Rare tea for serious tea drinkers”
  • “Treat your pet like celebrities do”
Use the USP in all your listings and marketing materials. You don’t have to repeat the same phrase all the time, but be sure your theme runs through your marketing materials.
Build your pricing model based on your USP. If your theme is high quality, rare or high status, your pricing can be higher. If your theme is catering to the family budget with affordable quality, you may want to run specials in line with family occasions, such as back to school, summer vacation and so on.
Finally, deliver on your USP’s promise. If your theme involves quality, be sure that your products stand up to scrutiny and offer a money back guarantee for anyone not satisfied.
Sellers who can successfully differentiate themselves in the EBay marketplace are the most likely to succeed.

Getting Started In Internet Mail Order

Now you have all the images on a great template and you are ready you start an eBay mail order company.Did you use the short cut or pay for lots of great photos? Whichever way you choose I am sure it looks great!!
The task now is creating the next stage of a money making machine and to do this we should make friends and establish trust on our path to build in credibility
Prepare for fresh interesting elements in Netbods route to success and keep your listings fresh and interesting.
A great hosting account is vital to your business success
Ensure you have a  hosting account to manage your headlines, images, captions and so on.
Keep Control
Now you must control all of the pictures and text that you use. If you use material that is hosted by someone else, such as a picture hosting site, those images may change or may in fact disappear without notice.
Maintain Efficiency
When you have many listings in a category you will have inserted an overview picture into each listing, so maintenance of this will be very time consuming so you can change images when you need to update it or substitute it. When you have a picture from your hosting account not a borrowed image hosted on a third party site), you only have to change your hosting site file and all of the listings are updated at the same time.
NOTE: consider creating a set of images for each product you resell. For example, if you resell Imperial Leather Soap and Moulton Brown Soap, use two separate sets of images for the two groups. This way if you want to change all the Imperial listings you can do so without affecting the Moulton Brown listings.
If you don't yet have a web hosting account, you can get a domain name and get hosted onon UK2.net for as little as £48/year (that's £4/month) also including a database, £20 free credits for Google Adwords, 3Gb of webspace and plenty of monthly bandwidth (up to 100GB).
King of Sales is in The Title
The amount you sell is totally based on the skills developed in writing a title. We all have 55 characters to make our case. eBay will place greatest emphasis on the first few words so make sure you have chosen those words wisely as a wordsmith you will need the greatest impact.
Great attractors are words that grab attention and my favourite is 'new' as heading this is always an attention getter.  Now a title is developed, you can use the heading to continue the main idea of the title and instantly give benefits.
Graphical Headlines Give Flexibility
Netbods see an advantage of creating all auction headlines as graphics so that you can easily tweak your eBay listings without needing to cancel the entire auction.
Simply changing an image on your hosting account, your eBay listing headline will get automatically updated. This will allow you to test the effectiveness of different headlines in a very short time, without needing to wait for the auction to end before you can test your next headline.
Also graphical headlines keep your users engaged in your eye attracting listing. You can easily create text headlines with any graphics program, including Paint (if you have Windows Vista installed on your computer, MS Paint is a much improved basic graphic editor compared to the Windows XP version). Only legible text makes sales so do not go wild with your choice of font. ROur objective remains to convert visitors to sales.
The graphic replaces text so when users search for items on eBay it simply searches the text in the auction listings to determine which results to return. If we replaced text with graphics you may run the risk of missing out on  some eBay search traffic. Make sure your main keywords are plain text within your auction description.
Use the right font
Your buyers/bidders will have all kinds of PC's and some only have simple fonts so beware to stick with Arial, Verdana and sans-serif as they are installed in virtually all computers.
Please don't use fancy fonts.
Make all listings fresh with relevant seasonal or properly related elements
Buyers all appreciate touches that show you care about what you sell. Market yourself like Harrods by  using a shop front (online) based on events, holidays and marketing catalysts as part of your listing. Upload pictures of ski's in Winter, beach umbrellas or even sunglasses during the Summer months. Switch to Tennis rackets when Wimbledon comes.
Bold Means Speed Reading For Better Sales
Write bullets in bold for key sentences, phrases or words. The buyer will pick up that text while scanning the page quickly as a first look.
Less Content = More Sales
Don't use too much text. Buyers will not spend the time required to understand pages that are filled with text. Keep length to 250 words or less in three, four or even five paragraphs.
Leave white space and skip a line between paragraphs.
Build Trust and Make Friends
We are all worried about being scammed when we buy online. So expect this when you sell by making sure  you display your feedback ratings with your listing. When displaying our feedback directly into a listing, we can display a preferred selection of feedback comments. You can also group your feedback by items sold, to give your buyer a better picture of the type of comments received for a specific item. To do this, create another folder called 'feedback' on your hosting website. Store feedback snippets labeled with a similar coding system. Use the URL technique to add or change feedback in your template. Remember to update feedback comments regularly to keep content fresh.
Add a nice touch by creating an About Me page on eBay.
Multiply Sales by Up-selling and Cross-Selling
Now buyer to comes to your listing ask for more and sell as many as you can.
Links to your store in all listings. Advertise your store generically, or better you can make your eBay store offers more attractive, relevant, complimentary links such as displaying images of beach bags and sunglasses on your listing pages for bathing suits will always result in higher and larger sales, more often.
Don't show just a text link to your eBay store. Use a graphic link to catch the eye and help the user make a positive connection that leads to clicking onto your store site. Consider adding a graphic next to your eBay store link for higher impact. Don't place your store links on the bottom of the page. Be sure the link is visible without scrolling.
Bundles
Another good multiplying strategy is to bundle items, especially consumables such as ink cartridges, film, batteries and so on. Offer a deal such as “buy three, get one free” or “Free shipping on multiple purchases”.
Reserve a space for special announcements
Create a one pixel by one pixel image and upload it to your hosting account. Reference to this image in your auction listing's html, without specifying the width and height of this image. Then, whenever you want to add something to your listing such as a delay in shipping or a special deal of the day, replace the white pixel file with an image of whatever announcement you want to make. Change it back when you're done.
IMPORTANT: For this technique to work, remember not to use just one 1x1 pixel image for all your listings. Instead create one 1x1 image for each type of announcement you are likely to need.
Summary
Using some extra care and attention as well as a few efficiency tricks can make the difference between being a low or average eBay seller and a powerful and profitable eBay seller.

How To Start Your Own Internet Mail Order Business From Home

Image representing eBay as depicted in CrunchBaseImage via CrunchBase
Whilst we specialise in bespoke web business systems, we recognise a need to help people get on the first rung of the ladder. Rather than spending thousands on a beautiful bespoke website that converts customers, we recommend making sure a real market exists for your online products and this blog will help with tips to accomplish your first steps online. We (Netbods) wish you every success with your endeavours and I will be always delighted to talk through any projects you might have on the drawing board.

The last thing you need is spending all your start-up capital and finding nobody wants your product or Internet service. On the reverse beware that some fantastic products are sometimes placed on badly built sites and hang like digital wallpaper nobody will ever see. Our aim is placing you in the top 5% of Internet sellers that get found.

To get started I would like to step you through some great techniques for ebay the number one auction web platform.

eBay is not a guaranteed route to success as it is competitive in its own right as more and more people are turning to eBay both to sell and to buy, it is important your listings stand out from the rest of the pack.
As savvy e-commerce entrepreneurs tell us they already have a very good understanding of how to advertise and set the right offerings on eBay.
Our starter tips:
1) Preparing the appearance of any listing you place is the major way that you demonstrate the superiority of your products and your company
2) Images make a big difference in increasing sale price as good images establish trust.
Having sold Hymer motor homes, VW campers, my own Porsche 911 (996), Range Rover and even soap on ebay I would like to offer up some help and to gain a very professional appearance very simply.
I can help you add as many images as you like without paying additional fees so you might efficiently upgrade your listings.
Sorting the wheat from the chaff
How do you tell an amateur from a top eBay business builder?
Business builders select a strong professional template that thematically ties to the product being sold and provides graphical elements that emphasise each element of the auction listing.
You have several ideas in developing and using eBay templates.
see more by callling your local Netbods business partner www.netbods.net will give you all the help with bespoked or custom work and firstly we can start looking at the fisrt steps

Change an existing template.

There are dozens of websites that provide at least some free templates that you can use for your listings. You can find 1,500 free eBay templates at the Auctiva web site
Another option for some are auction templates already available in the eBay's Turbo Lister software, if you want my honest opinion they do not convert as well, as Auctiva.
I will let you know of other examples to create eBay Business Builder templates as opposed to the usual garbage we get offered on eBay and you will need to spend two or three pounds maximum.
Commission a Netbods BESPOKED template
Hang on to your wallet as I can help out here and at Netbods http://www.netbods.co.uk/ we are roughly £200-£500 depending complexity required, joking apart once you are confident enough I highly recommend you go down this path once you get confident enough to run your own eBay account and eBay shop front identity.
If we do this correctly we should only need build this once and that will last for as long or as short a period as you need. Netbods advise that this bespoked template should pay for itself many many times until you decide to renew your eBay look at some time in the future.
With Netbods we are very experienced at setting up a website for a fraction of the normal costs of a high end web developer and have many household names as clients.
We would say once you get established and find business coming in you should seriously consider a bespoked template especially if your products are focused in one area as you can markete under a common theme such as gardening or as an interior designer, denim clothing,
Only you can decide if the time is right to outshine the competition with a unique template design for your auctions.
Do It Yourself template
Some people are great at both designing and programming (we say many claim to be great although very few are great at both design and HTML) with HTML, you can use your favorite graphics program to design your own template. Please beware how you proceed as an amateur job will work against you. We see some people who can knit a nice jumper and some might even wear it in a business meeting!!
Using Your Template
  1. Once you have your decided on the template, you should copy the HTML code into the appropriate place in Turbo Lister, or in your eBay account when placing your new listing manually.  Right click anywhere on any page to view the HTML, now select option View Source (if you have never tried this before, try it now. Right click on this page and select View Source to view this page's html code). A text editor window will appear showing the page's html code. Select all the code, copy it and then paste it in the eBay listing wizard to begin listing your item.
  2. Be sure to save the HTML If you are using eBay's Turbo lister, you can save the HTML as your new template. You can then recall the template at any time in the future for new listings. To save the HTML as a template, in Turbo Lister under the 'New' tab, click 'create new template'.
  3. Scroll down to 'description builder'
  4. Click  'HTML view'
  5. Paste the code
  6. Return to 'Design View' to see how good it looks.
More Images = More Business
Good Images = Good Image
Need to just remind you once again we are going to use a lot of good images to give your customers a very good understanding of what they will be buying and to demonstrate you care about whatever it is you are selling.
Now, you've taken some good photos of your items you want to ad them and usually this costs profit to add photos to our eBay listing
Let me share a Netbods top tip to avoid paying image fees by inserting HTML codes that link to a hosted website where your image is located.
You will upload an image (gif, jpg, etc) to your template and pay the extra eBay fee, or, if your image is located on a website somewhere else on the Internet, you can insert the HTML code for that location ... and not pay a fee. All you need is a hosting account that contains your images.
You could already have a website operating to sell your products.
Build an image repository. Simply upload your eBay images to a folder in your hosting account with good clear labels to you can find images easily at a later stage, and reference to each image in your HTML whenever you need it, without having to pay eBay for this privilege.
If you are not at the stage to have a website, establish a domain name, register with a domain host to begin this image hosting process.
Domain registration and web hosting is simple and inexpensive. You can buy a name and get hosted on UK2 for as little as £2.50 monthly including a domain name.
To understand domain names and hosting, read the website of your host as most make it very simple.
Now we get back to work at Turbo Lister. Change the 'photo hosting' option to your website. When you get to the 'upload images' area, copy and paste the URL location of your photos. When a potential customer clicks on your listing, the URL will pull up the photo or image you placed there.
If you would like to use an image as the headline, delete the text from the headline box, click on 'insert picture' then copy and paste the URL into the headline box.
In a nutshell
To make your listings as professional as possible with well-designed templates you should dazzle your customer witeth beautiful photographs, avoiding fees by hosting your own images on a separate website
